A marvellous obit in the Guardian noted that his favoured clothing, dark trousers with striped shirt and collar, made him a reassuring figure to 50s and 60s television audiences, numbering six million at their peak. He wore cardigans for outdoors work. As a pacifist, he refused to do wartime army service and worked as a fireman instead.
