A headline in the Guardian announces: 'Highway robbery - Yorkshire claims outlaw', above a story about Robin Hood. The county does, it seems, have some claim to the historical figure, since Sherwood Forest nearly reached Leeds and, as canny Yorkshiremen point out, no self-respecting outlaw would have located himself near the Nottingham. By chance, I see that Leeds firm Carey Jones has made Robin Hood the theme of its annual party coming up at the end of February. 'Join us to quaff a flaggon of mead, ' says the invitation enticingly. Happily, the dress code does not include silly hats, bootees, bows and arrows, or Lincoln green (yet another county).
