HAWKSMOOR STREET, LONDON, SW6

SMALL PROJECTS / PART 1

Architect: Ian Hill

Cost: £95,000

This terraced cottage on the Hammersmith/Fulham border has been refurbished and extended at the rear.

The extension has created a social space - 'a mediating fulcrum' - that is both kitchen and garden. The architect sought 'a quiet dialogue between the minimalist insertions and the existing Victorian fabric'. The rear load-bearing wall was demolished to connect the newly landscaped courtyard garden and the living space. All structural steel work was hidden in the depth of the existing structure, allowing the ceiling plane to extend as a brise soleil into the garden.
