Hawkins\Brown has won the go-ahead for this £26.1 million civic and cultural building in the centre of Corby, Northamptonshire. The competition-winning scheme, dubbed the 'Corby Cube', will house council offices, a 445seat theatre, studio space, a library, a roof-top restaurant and a chamber for marriage ceremonies. Backed by the North Northants Development Company, the project was granted planning permission at the same time as S&P Architects' 50m swimming pool for the former steel town (ajplus 22.11.05). Both buildings will sit in a new square and be linked to the rest of the town by a tree-lined paved walkway. The Cube is to be clad in black and reective glass and will feature a cantilevered reading room on the first floor. All the facilities will be arranged around a spiralling ramp which will start in the foyer and end in a helical stair leading to the restaurant on the roof.
