Ideas contest: Deadline 5 July 2013: Design the Future Reception to win £5,000

Read the full brief and details on how to enter the Future Reception competition

You arrive at Derwent’s new building, the White Collar Factory, for your appointment with the creative director of a design agency. You enter at the ground floor and begin looking for the reception desk, but this isn’t just any reception – this is the future. What happens next is up to you…

The brief

The brief is to design a reception and arrival sequence for a real project – Derwent’s new building, a 16-storey 26,590m² office block designed by AHMM, located just off Old Street roundabout. The winning scheme will not be built. This competition is an opportunity for Derwent London and Office Concierge to meet fresh talent and to explore how future receptions will provide a more inclusive experience for anyone who visits office buildings. The winning idea will reflect changing work practices and the need for a dramatic, enjoyable and efficient arrival sequence. It should include your ideas about possible technology, space and the flow of people – 2,500 employees will arrive at the office daily and 500 visitors. There should be no sense of waiting; visitors should be welcomed by at least one person, and, if you are heading upstairs to the offices, or returning to reception from a meeting, for fire and security reasons, you need to be accounted for, and may also require a visitor pass.

Your design may, or may not, include a ‘desk’. A plan of the reception space for the real building is provided, but this is an ideas competition, and the project will not be realised, however Derwent and Office Concierge are keen to discover new talent. How the reception space is organised is up to you. The main entrance and elevators are indicated, there is also a mezzanine overlooking the space that could be included as part of the design concept.
