BEI-Teesside project director Matthew Day commissioned Thomas Heatherwick after hearing him on BBC Radio 4. ‘I already knew Heatherwick’s work and he said he wanted to design a power station. So the next day I rang him up,’ says Day. ‘Art galleries have been done to death, but power stations have not had the same level of design attention. I liked Heatherwick’s attention to detail without making the design overly complicated.’
Occupying a third of the brownfield site, the building will include offices and a visitor centre, and will be clad in panels planted with indigenous grasses. The remainder of the site will be landscaped with native planting.
The plant is predicted to be 32 per cent efficient when generating electricity, increasing to 58 per cent efficiency when it also supplies heat. It will supply district heating to BioRegional Quintain’s Middlehaven regeneration scheme.
