VEKA Oldham-based trade fabricator Gemini UPVC has opted to switch to VEKA's Matrix 70mm fully sculpted system to satisfy the increasing demand for frames. Baggeridge Brick The Urban Sun-Setts garden - awardwinner at this year's Chelsea Flower Show - has used a mosaic of clay cobbles and Sirocco Russet Sovereign Stock bricks by Baggeridge Brick. The striking sunflower pattern and water feature were made using blue and buff cobbles while the Stock bricks were used to construct a low retaining wall to complement the plants and cobbles.

Pilkington A combination of Pilkington Activ selfcleaning glass and Energy Advantage low-e glass has been used extensively at Ithaca New York's new Museum of the Earth. With the building having an overhanging roof in some areas, Pilkington Activ was chosen for its low maintenance credentials. Pilkington Activ's technology uses UV light to break down dirt deposits on the glass, then uses rain to wash the dirt away.

Alwitra As a result of rocketing material costs, the original profiled metal roof of the Elizabeth House development in Hampshire was replaced by for Alwitra's Evalon single ply roof. Acrypol Potentially harardous steps to Harlow's Bush Fair shopping centre have been coated with Acrypol's Quartzdek system to provide a slip-resistant and waterproof finish.

Quartzdek combines quartz granules with a tough flexible polyurethane resin, and can be used over concrete, asphalt and ceramic tiles. Available in three colour mixes, it is suitable for use on walkways, balconies, roof gardens, stairs and risers.

Forticrete Local authority engineers at Teignmouth District Council were able to save money on a new flood prevention scheme by using Forticrete's Keystone dry-build retaining wall system. In the construction of the 400m long, 2m high protective wall, Keystone Classic split-faced units were specified in Russet to provide a natural stone appearance, with built-in strength provided by the glass-fibre pin fixing system.

Showerlux Bathroom specialist Showerlux has launched Shower Shield, an easy-clean coating applied to the interior of shower enclosure glass to combat the build up of dirt, soap deposits and limescale, and maintain the original shiny finish for longer.

Grace Construction Products Grace has supplied a combination of waterproofing technologies for the concrete slab, walls and partly buried roof of a private house recently televised on the Grand Designs programme. Grace Preprufe, a composite membrane with a weatherresistant protective coating, was loose laid onto CFC-free insulation. Grace Bituthene was applied to external block walls, and Grace Procor was used on the roof.

Rock Asphalte Flexiphalte Triple Protection Systems offer two waterproofing layers underneath a third layer of insulation to provide total protection to roofs. Designed to be laid flat on concrete roofs, the system comprises Flexiphalte Baryprene membrane and Flexiphalte Pommar, bonded using hot bitumen to the substrate. This can be covered with ballast and paving slabs for a conventional inverted roof - or soil and plants for a green roof.

Remmers A combination of products from Remmers has been used to restore the exterior of a printers' building in Blackheath, south London, in preparation for its conversion into offices and apartments. Funcosil Fine Render was applied as a levelling coat, followed by water-repellent Funcosil Lightweight Render Dekor. Microporous Funcosil LA Silicone Paint provided a waterproof, UV-resistant finish.

Honeywell Control Systems Honeywell heating controls are allowing a private house in Cheshire to use waste heat from telecommunications equipment to supply its total heating requirements.

Specially adapted Excel controls were installed at Lymm Tower House to allow the waste energy produced by the cooling systems of five cellphone networks to be channelled through, via a heat exchanger.

Remaining heat is dissipated by a chiller unit.

Horning Parket Horning Parket says that the reason many parquet blocks are manufactured short is down to imperfections and weakness in the timber. Its herringbone parquet, Horning claims, is made from high-quality blocks which are long enough to avoid the overelaborate pattern that can result from using shorter blocks. Horning products comprise two different wood species and have an expected lifespan equal to the building itself.

Crescent of Cambridge A Crescent helical stair has become a dramatic design element in a private residential project by Cheshire Robbins Design Group. The stair's box section stringers enable the stair to span from fl oor to floor without additional support - enhancing the spacious ambience of the poolside areas. Folded, tray-type treads have ash inlays to blend with the surrounding hardwood fl oor.

Hydro International South West Water Services has installed Hydro's Grit King Separator and Hydro Grit-Cleanse Classifier to protect the inlet works of its upgraded wastewater treatment works in the Tavy river valley. The Grit King Separator removes 95 per cent of grit down to 200 microns at peak flow, while the Classifier produces washed grit with less than five per cent faecal organic material, for use elsewhere.

Ventrolla Ventrolla has completed a commercial contract to retain and improve the traditional sash windows of Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket. As a period building, replacement windows and secondary glazing were deemed unsuitable and expensive. Instead, Ventrolla's Perimeter Sealing System was added to the existing windows to improve the acoustics. Ventrolla East Anglia carried out the contract.

Pilkington A vast infrastructure project in Auckland, New Zealand, has made extensive use of Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass. A spectacular glasshouse which acts as a mezzanine links a 28m long glass bridge to an underground railway station. The glasshouse, built using more than 1,800 louvres, incorporates toughened Pilkington Activ glass that reacts with UV light to break down dirt, so that rain can wash it away.

Boise Boise Building Products has devised a simple method of building its BCI Joists into external walls. The I-bloc can be pushed on to the end of the BCI Joist positioned on the blockwork. Made from Versa-Lam laminated veneered lumber, the I-bloc does not shrink or twist after it has been fitted.

The joist cap mechanism complies with Parts B, L and E of the building regulations, and is approved by the NHBC.

Mumford & Wood Windows from Mumford & Wood's new Contemporary range have been used throughout the conversion of a disused warehouse to luxury apartments in east London. The project used laminated larch Tilt and Turn frames with concealed hinges.

Using energy-efficient low E glass, the windows were completed with satin chrome ironmongery. All Contemporary products come in made-to-measure modular sizes.

BlueSky BlueSky's PhotoLine service allows almost instant access to aerial photography and maps covering the whole of the UK.

Kaba Kaba has launched Air-Gate, an air curtain which it claims uses 80 per cent less energy than traditional air curtains. The Air-Gate is activated when the door is opened and uses only air at room temperature. Instead of blowing air down, it uses fans on either side of the door to create a curtain of air down its length.
