It is never easy being a pioneer of Modernism, even if you're seafood supremo Rick Stein.

His controversial decision to appoint Architects Design Group in Plymouth to design a contemporary house in Padstow, Cornwall, has aroused unusually strong feelings, including a petition instigated by outraged local Mrs Pickard. 'They say Rick Stein has a love affair with Padstow, 'Mrs Pickard told the Daily Telegraph last weekend. 'People are beginning to wonder whether it's consensual.'
