Julia Barfield was on good form at the conference on iconic building and regeneration, organised by the South East Arts Board and Hastings Council last week. In a presentation on the London Eye, she showed a hilarious 'valueengineered' version of the passenger capsules, suggested by Mitsubishi to save money, which briefly threatened to bring the entire project to a halt. Another good yarn concerned the planning fee, and how to calculate it. After a good deal of head-scratching, Lambeth planners decided to treat it as a very ordinary project - and charged £67.50.
