East Enders

Asplendid party at Richard MacCormac's, marking the end of the two-day conference on Spitalfields that surely saw the emergence of a Covent Garden-style resistance to the crude imposition of speculative offices by, shamefully, the City Corporation, helped by Foster and Partners. Guests unamused by the lack of urban thinking being applied to the site included deputy mayor Nicky Gavron, Covent Garden protest veteran Dan Cruickshank, Piers Gough and many others. Why don't they knock down the whole market but produce a worthy proposal in the spirit of the 21st century - rich in mix, generous to the local community and beautifully designed?
