We present the winning entries in the open, two-stage competition to create new democratic meeting places for Stockport, Bradford and North Hertfordshire (Letchworth).

Organised by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) and supported by the AJ, CABE, Design Council and Mouchel Consulting, the competition forms part of a larger project exploring the role that design might play in promoting democratic engagement and civic pride. An exhibition of the winning and shortlisted schemes is on show at the RIBA (until 26 January). The competition was judged by Robin Nicholson (chair), Matthew Taylor (IPPR), Ben Rogers (IPPR), Julia Barfield, Ron Arad, Paul Finch and a council leader from the appropriate local authority.
