David Chipperfield Architects

David Chipperfield Architects is the only British practice on the shortlist to design the Hinter dem Giesshaus 1 gallery in Berlin.

The practice was invited to compete against Frank Gehry, Peter Zumthor, Hans Kollhoff and Ron Radziner by art patron Heiner Bastian.

Chipperfield's proposal, on a city centre site opposite the Museum Island, is for this four-storey building with three floors of gallery space, topped by a penthouse apartment. It has a sandstone facade on reconstituted stone consoles.
