Gleeds

Gleeds has worked on the Lancaster University site for the last 30 years and was the quantity surveyor for the original university buildings, so we were delighted to be appointed on such a high-profile project.

The main contractor was appointed by the traditional route, adopting single-stage tendering procedures and with full measured bills of quantities including m&e services. The jct80 form of contract with quantities was selected.

The scheme was substantially funded by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

The unique design and location of the building have clearly affected the level of costs. Several examples of the high-quality finishes that are inherent features of the building are listed as follows:

the unusual shape and material content of the external facade

the oak wall cladding surrounding the Venetian-plastered walls

the high-quality display cases

the glass floor and glass bridge linking the galleries.

The high level of cost of the protective installations reflects the security systems that are necessary to protect the valuable archive material.
