EUROPAN 7: SUBURBAN CHALLENGE, URBAN INTENSITY AND HOUSING DIVERSITY The increasing use of the car, the development of out-of-town shopping centres, the increase in leisure complexes, and the extension of business parks seem to be leading to a 'dispersed town'urban model.

There is a new will to act in order to reorganise them by reviving the traditional planning ethos of European towns, and by associating this with the challenges of urban sustainability. STOCKPORT TOWN CENTRE Design competition to give a new look to Stockport town centre.

The competition is set to raise the town's profile in the region, and involves producing a vision to guide a facelift for St Peter's Square and Mersey Square.
