City of Manchester Stadium, Arup

Highly commended

Arup Associates' City of Manchester Stadium, the backdrop to the XVII Commonwealth Games last summer and the new home of Manchester City Football Club, has been designed as a stadium for the people, with comfort and enjoyment of spectators the key priorities.

The stadium acts a landmark in the city.

Its arrow-like masts, which support a standing-seam aluminium roof, are visible for miles around and symbolise the dramatic regeneration that has taken place in Eastlands, one of Manchester's poorest boroughs. The distinctive cable-net roof is the stadium's most striking element and was only achieved through a close collaboration between architect and engineer from the outset of the design.
