Castleford to star in Channel 4 'town makeover' initiative

Channel 4 has chosen Castleford in West Yorkshire as the location for an ambitious town design makeover project.

Working with the community and architects, C4 aims to choose a number of locations and encourage local people to regenerate them, with the help of professional advice.

Commissioned by C4's arts department, the programme reflects the channel's stated ambition of 'promoting creativity in contemporary design and architecture'. The work in Castleford will form a major C4 television series late next year.

Talkback Productions - the company behind Grand Designs, Jamie's Kitchen and Property Ladder - will make the series, which will be presented by Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs and Property Ladder's Sarah Beeny.

They will unveil the projects later in 2003 and C4 hopes to start on site by early 2004.

Director of programmes Tim Gardam said the show fulfils an important part of C4's public service mission.
