Architect: ASD (London Metropolitan University)

Cost: £7,000

The three structures shown here and overleaf were designed by second-year architecture students at London Metropolitan University (LMU). This canopy was designed for Canonbury School, Islington, which needed an outdoor classroom for four to five year olds. A range of designs was discussed with governors, teachers and children, with the priorities of the pupils and staff 'not necessarily matching'. The solution was a canopy of birch-veneered plywood, which cantilevers in all directions. All elements except the concrete foundations and steel columns were produced by the student team.
