Calatrava's spectacular roof

Contractors employed by the Athens 2004 organisation and the Greek government this week began to install Santiago Calatrava's spectacular roof of the Olympic Stadium. Covering an area of 26,900m 2, the oval-shaped roof is composed of two steel and plexiglass structures that Calatrava compares to 'bent leaves'.The roof was designed so that its structural elements could be prefabricated off-site for more efficient installation. The off-site assembly was carried out on schedule by mid-April.Calatrava's masterplan for the Athens Olympic Sports Complex also includes the creation of sculptural landmarks, including an undulating 'Nations Wall'.
