The brief for the refurbishment of a flat on the 13th floor of the Barbican was to create as much living space as possible while providing an additional shower room and study. The shower room was accommodated by repositioning the doors of the three existing bedrooms and using the freed corridor space. The front lobby was opened up to previously hidden panoramic views of London, framed by a gently curving wall and pod. Integration of the kitchen with the living area formed a large open-plan layout, with the kitchen set within a defined box. The study is contained in a moveable pod with folding doors, finished in cherry veneer. The contractor was Baker Samuels; the contract sum was £40,000.
