Big names shortlisted for £7m Cardiff arts centre

Ash Sakula Architects, Studio BAAD and Caruso St John Architects are among those shortlisted in a competition for a new arts venue for Cardiff. The other practices on the list, vying to design The Depot, are Kleihues + Kleihues, Keith Williams Architects and Wyn Thomas Gordon Lewis.

The project - part of Cardiff 's bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008 - will include a facility for visiting and resident artists and a large 'international-quality' exhibition space.

Cardiff 2008, the organisation behind the bid, has identified a site for the centre - a Grade-II transport depot on Clare Road in Grangetown.

Competition organiser Gordon Dalton said the designs for the centre must work with the old depot.

'We received a very high standard of proposals from many very talented practices, ' Dalton said.

'The shortlisted practices all have experience working with both visual arts and the conversion of industrial buildings.'
