Bidders under orders for £14bn Beijing bonanza

The Beijing Olympic Bids Committee (BOBICO) is to invite architects to pitch for the US$20 billion (£14.2 billion) Olympic Park and related city infrastructure improvements in December (AJ 19.7.01).

Tenders will be published in English and Mandarin in the overseas edition of the Chinese state newspaper People's Daily. Entries will be judged by a dedicated projects committee reporting directly to BOBICO. 'Domestic and international architectural firms are all welcome to pitch, ' said BOBICO construction project planning chief Professor Gao Yi Cun. The emphasis of the selection criteria is on sports venue design experience, especially Olympic designs.'

A masterplan has been assembled by the Beijing Architect and Research Institute and the Beijing Municipal and Engineering Institute, based on entries from an international design competition held last summer. Of the 16 entries - six of which were European - designs by US practice RTKL and the Beijing Architect and Research Institute were picked. A hybrid design was then produced from the two winning concepts.

Leading British architects including HOK Sport and WML + Woods Bagot are holding talks with BOBICO with a view to submitting proposals.
