Best of the year shortlisted for the RIBA's special awards

The RIBA has named the projects shortlisted for this year's special prizes. The shortlists were drawn from the 70 RIBA award-winning buildings for 2003. The winners will be announced on 11 October at the presentation of the RIBA Stirling Prize in association with the AJ at the science centre Explore@Bristol. THE AJ FIRST BUILDING AWARD - sponsored by Robin Ellis Design and Construction.

This prize goes to the best example of a first stand-alone building by a British architect practising within the European Union.

THE RIBA CLIENT OF THE YEAR

Architecture: The Arts Council of England. This award honours the key role that a good client plays in the creation of fine architecture.

GREATER MANCHESTER for work including the Convention Centre and Urbis.

GATESHEAD for the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the RIBA Stirling Prizewinning Millennium Bridge.

The UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE for the Centre for Mathematical Sciences and postgraduate housing

THE PEABODY TRUST for BedZed in Wallington, Surrey

LABAN for the new dance centre in London SE8

THE STEPHEN LAWRENCE PRIZE sponsored by the Goldschmied Trust.This prize rewards the best examples of projects with a construction budget of less than £350,000.

THE ADAPT TRUST ACCESS AWARD supported by the ADAPT Trust. The award honours excellence in access provision to arts and heritage buildings, demonstrating that good design automatically includes good access facilities for people of all abilities.

WHITBY ABBEY VISITOR CENTRE: Stanton Williams.

HAMPSTEAD THEATRE, LONDON NW3: Bennetts Associates.

LABAN, LONDON SE8: Herzog & de Meuron.

THE CROWN ESTATE CONSERVATION AWARD supported by The Crown Estate.

The prize will be presented for the best work of conservation which includes a significant design element.
