Berlin calling

Controversy has also broken out in Germany over the appointment of Albert Speer Jr to masterplan a 16-mile boulevard connecting Beijing's 2008 Olympic complex with the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Tasteless comparisons are being made with Albert Speer Sr's work for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The poor architect, a very nice man, by the way, points out that the idea of an axis is certainly not something invented by the Nazis. As for the specific comparison: 'What I am trying to do in Beijing is to transport a 2,000-year-old city into the future. Berlin in the 1930s was just megalomania.'
