An oval copper roof and projecting overflow spout
The single-storey building is divided into three multipurpose spaces by folding sliding doors set within pairs of U-shaped in-situ concrete pockets, each of which supports a concrete portal, in turn supporting the steel roof structure.
The roof, oval in plan, slopes down from north to south and tilts towards a valley gutter at the centre.
It is covered with prepatinated copper sheet with double lock standing seams, laid out to direct rainwater into the gutter.
Seen from the hill above, the roof covering is reminiscent of a leaf - the standing seams are the 'veins', the gutter is a 'stem' extending to a stalk, the overflow spout.
The northernmost space is a drama teaching area - when opened up, it doubles as a proscenium stage.
The roof overhangs on the north side to create an external area floored with a timber deck for external performances.
The north wall is clad with vertical cedar boarding to provide a warm and tactile backdrop against which the students can sit or perform.
The valley gutter is formed within the depth of the roof deck and is lined with copper. It terminates in a weir at the bottom of the slope and discharges through three copper spigots, which are sleeved into three 100mm diameter uPVC downpipes set within the wall thickness.
The prepatinated copper overflow spout is reinforced internally with copper fins of varying depths and secured with straps to the copper fascias at each side.
It rests against a copperfaced ply gutter panel, fitted with a 100mm diameter overflow pipe that drains into it.
