Alsop's Brum station redesign on verge of financial oblivion

Alsop Architects' plans to redesign Birmingham New Street Station face collapse because the Strategic Rail Authority cannot afford the scheme.

The quango has admitted that any attempts to fund the project from its own resources have been ruled out because of a drastic cash shortfall. It has said this will be the situation for at least another two years. SRA managing director Jim Steer last week called on Birmingham City Council to 'decide what it wants to do with the station'.

But Birmingham City Council said it would not help fund the project. Strategic planner Mike Taylor said: 'It's a bit rich they are demanding we sort it out when it is a problem of their own making. It is not our responsibility.'

Will Alsop said the plans had not been entirely abandoned. 'I think the SRA will be forced to at least complete the first stage, making the station safe, ' he told the AJ.
