AJ100: BDP is the biggest, Fosters the most respected

BDP International has emerged as the largest practice in the UK, Foster and Partners the most respected, and the legal profession the one most architects would have entered if they had not plumped for design, according to this year's exclusive AJ100 survey (pages 47 to 77).

The new enlarged survey this year reveals that BDP, headed by Richard Saxon, has toppled last year's largest practice by number of qualified architects employed, Sheppard Robson, into second place. It also shows that Foster and Partners tops both the architectural fee income table and the list of most respected firms - getting a staggering 50 per cent of the vote from 251 firms questioned.

But almost half said that their educational training had not been sufficient for the job in hand and almost 15 per cent of architects said that they would have been lawyers if design had passed them by.
