Royal Commonwealth Pool Refurbishment by S&P Architects
[RETROFIT AWARD PREVIEW] The refurbishment of Edinburgh’s Grade A listed swimming pool is shortlisted in the Post War Listed Buildings category
The improvements to meet performance standards for competitive swimming and recreational needs will allow the Commonwealth Pool to be a venue for the diving completion at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and continue as Scotland’s centre of excellence for diving.
The existing 50m pool was replaced with a level deck, 51.5m long by 21m wide pool and the diving pool has been replaced with a pool 25m wide by 16.25 long to provide adequate depth for modern diving and synchronised swimming. The diving platforms are 3m, 5m, 7.5, and 10m high all 3m wide with 2 springboards each at 1m and 3m.
A terrace with give good sight lines over the new pools provides 900 spectator seats.
The teaching pool has also been replaced with a 25m pool and other new facilities include a health club, gym and studios, with a café, crèche and children’s facilities provided around the redesigned entrance foyer.
