Feeringbury Barn, Essex by Hudson Architects

[RETROFIT AWARD WINNER] Hudson’s conversion of a large Grade II listed barn won a Retrofit Award in the Listed Buildings category

Situated on a working farm in Essex the semi-industrial appearance of the building had to be maintained to meet the requirements of conservation officers.

As the large roof was not allowed to contain any visible fenestration it was constructed with large bay rooflights, made from multi-wall corrugated polycarbonate with a perforated steel mesh laid over the top, to allow light into the barn. These perforations face upwards providing the interior with diffuse light, while externally the rooflights are concealed from view.

Although the interior of the barn could not be subdivided the barn’s existing concrete silos were moved to break up the large space and now used as bathrooms and to house an oak spiral staircase.
