Abito Apartments by Building Design Partnership

Greengate, Salford, Manchester

The triangular Salford site forms part of a wider masterplan. The 256 'micro' apartments surround a semi-external courtyard, partly protected from the weather by a fabric canopy. Occupants access their flats via a single lift and stair core; the central courtyard is overlooked by open walkways.

By definition the building is repetitive and modular, which led to the off-site prefabrication of many building elements. The external elevations are largely glazed with ‘clip on' balconies which incorporate solid side panels, creating a private external space for each unit.

Each apartment has two areas – one for living and one for sleeping. 3.5m floor-to-ceiling heights give these very small apartments a sense of space. This is an innovative and interesting project that has been delivered with conviction and care.
