A single name to cover many different towns

Surely Will Alsop (AJ 6.3.03) has been to Barnsley often enough to know that nowhere significantly north of it is ever considered part of 'South Yorkshire'?

Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield, all former clothing towns, are very much West Yorkshire (even though there is local inter-urban rivalry between Leeds and Bradford, and even Halifax and Huddersfield). The whole area to which he refers, plus a great deal more, already has a well-understood regional title - Yorkshire.
