It would be a pity if 3XN's bold incursion into the Liverpool architecture scene should prove to be in vain following the Heritage Lottery Fund's decision to turn down its proposal for the Fourth Grace site last week.

Although, even if the money is not forthcoming, this may not spell the end of the project.

Why not nip across the Mersey and park it on some waste land in Birkenhead, just as Will Alsop threatened to do with his Cloud proposal? The two could sit side by side, gazing reproachfully across the river. After all, these former shipbuilding centres should not be unfamiliar with the concept of a scrapyard.
