GM + AD bag Australian debut

Glasgow-based GM + AD Architects has landed its first scheme ‘down under’ - the design of the new Glenroy Specialist School, in Melbourne

The 26-classroom building in the State of Victoria will also house physiotherapy, occupational therapy and hydrotherapy spaces as well as specialist medical support areas, library, art, Music, IT, multi-sensory and multi-purpose centres.

The scheme has recently received a £7.5 million handout from the Federal Government of Australia - the single biggest award ever in the country for a specialist school.

Describing the practice’s role in the project, practice founder Alan Dunlop said: ‘[We] have an ongoing consultancy role supporting the principal, the school community and the nominated architects in the identification of community needs, selection of a site and maximising the potential for development of the brief for the school based on the extensive research that was done in the development of the Hazelwood school.’

Hazlewood school was recently featured in the BBC 2 programme, The Designed World (BBC iPlayer).

Postscript: Alan Dunlop was recently invited by Kansas State University to take on the Victor L. Regnier Visiting Chair for the 2009 - 2010 academic year
