Visible detailing is kept to a minimum, with only a shadow gap to allow for construction tolerances in the in-situ concrete.
The window design is based on a proprietary structural glazing system by Schüco. The anodised aluminium frames are set flush with the gallery floor and window reveals, so the glazing covers the full extent of the window opening when viewed from inside. The detail allows visitors to walk right up to the glass for views out of the gallery. Motorised solar control and black-out blinds are concealed behind pressed metal access panels integrated at the window head.
The external concrete walls are lined with foil-faced rigid insulation boards, mechanically fixed to the internal face of the concrete. All joints and fixings are taped to maintain a continuous vapour control layer on the internal face of the insulation. To avoid cold bridging, the in-situ floor slabs are isolated from the walls by 40mm-thick rigid insulation packed to the full thickness of the slab. Structural continuity is maintained by proprietary stainless steel dowel connectors cast into the walls and slabs at regular centres.
Internally, walls are finished with an 18mm Fermacell lining set away from external walls to provide a 250mm cavity for building services.
