Ryder's behemoth biomass plant approved

Plans for the biggest biomass plant in Scotland have been approved

Originally drawn up by Gordon Murray Architects in 2010 before the practice’s merger with Ryder Architecture (AJ 15.02.2011), the combined heat and power renewable energy plant next to the Grangemouth container terminal has the capacity to generate 120MW of electricity.

According to the practice, the design ‘draws heavily on the Port of Grangemouth’s position as Scotland’s largest container terminal, using the size and shape of cargo container as the basic building block of the new plant, stacked to orientate the higher elements of the plant away from the town to the south.’

With Dundee and Rosyth, the £465 million Grangemouth facility is one of three proposed biomass plants designed by Ryder for Forth Energy (AJ 240.02.2011). 

Forth Energy is a joint venture between Forth Ports Limited and SSE plc (Scottish Southern Energy).

Work is due to start on site in 2014. Plant is expect to come online in 2017.

Grangemouth is Scotland’s largest container terminal. The proposed site is currently used to store containers. We considered the cargo container as the basic building-block of the new plant, stacked to orientate the higher elements of the plant away from the town. A semi-translucent form encloses the highest elements, reading as part of a sequence of set pieces in the area, including the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpie boatlift. Chris Malcolm
