LED downlights

[Sustainable products] In a growing market that is yet to establish standards, stick with brands you trust, says Sandy Patience

In a surge reminiscent of that of the first incandescent bulbs, lighting founded on light-emitting diode (LED) technology has almost caught up with its marketing hype. The average lumen-perwatts efficiency has doubled in the past two years to around 46lm/W - well above the Part L threshold of 40lm/W.

The LED market is split into two categories. ‘Replacement’ LEDs represent the largest market share. These can be attached to a fitting in the familiar way, sometimes as a substitute for a traditional bulb. Beyond retrofitting, the future of lighting design is the ‘embedded LED’, where light source and fitting are one.

This shift represents a significant change in lighting design. The price for getting it wrong will be of chief concern because, unlike a normal fitting, where just the bulb is replaced, an embedded LED fitting will need replacing in its entirety. The industry is addressing problems such as low efficiency, poor light quality, fitting failure and wildly optimistic performance claims, but the overall impression is still of a market in great flux.

Also alarming is the prospect of a market without standards. The recent publication of Guidelines for Specification of LED Lighting Products, by a group of leading trade rganisations, is a move in the right direction, but the onus is still on the specifier to demand verifiable design data, photometry and performance metrics. If in doubt, follow the warranties and stick with the brands you trust.
