Klik Systems LEDPOD adds a gleam of glamour to Carrum Foreshore Precinct, Melbourne (Victoria)

Klik Systems are delighted to announce that their award winning LEDPOD rail light is being used throughout renovations to the Carrum Foreshore Precinct, Port Philip Bay.

Over two stages of the project, initiated by Kingston City Council and due to be completed in June 2013, a total of 200 LEDPODS will be installed.

The popular beaches of Melbourne are calm stretches of sand within Port Philip Bay, a large, deeply indented and almost landlocked expanse of water extending northward from Bass Strait. The sand is clean and tidal movements generally keep them pollution free, though recent weather has caused issues which local councils have been keen to stamp out.

The main goal of the Carrum Foreshore renovation is to enhance the area for visitors, allowing greater accessibility for water sports while keeping the area safe for families. Safety through lighting was considered a vital addition, and the award-winning Klik LEDPOD was chosen to illuminate new boardwalks through the dunes leading down towards the beach. The LED fitting snaps into the underside of handrails, providing an elegant walkway at sundown, where visitors can enjoy romantic views of the bay.

After three public meetings and consultations with local residents in March and May 2012, works began in September 2012. “Klik are proud to be chosen to help upgrade this beautiful area, which so many people can enjoy,” said Cliff Hadley, marketing manager at Klik Systems.

Other upgrades include safer beach access, upgrading the Lifesaving Club, building an erosion control walls, and creating boardwalks to the beach and through the dunes.

The Klik LEDPOD won IES Luminaire Design Award for Excellence in 2011. The ingenious ‘snap-in’ LED is designed for handrails of any size, and focuses light downwards on steps and paths.

Stage 1 was completed on February 13th. Stage two is due to start in March 2013, when more Ledpods will be installed to carefully illuminate pathways and steps.

When developing the LEDPOD, Klik Systems wanted the light source located out of view, under the handrail, effectively lighting the stairs/walkway with good vertical illumination, whilst minimising glare. This makes LEDPOD particularly useful in areas where no overhead lighting is possible. Light spillage into the natural setting of the foreshore and sea, where the darkness of night should not be disturbed is thus kept to a minimum.

The fixture fits flush into handrails of any size, has a sleek contemporary aesthetic and has been used in many large-scale projects such as transport hubs and bridges. The LED’s asymmetrical optical system was specially designed to eliminate glare. A custom designed heat sink ensures that heat on the glass lens and handrail never exceeds 35 deg. Installation and maintenance are made simple with a retaining spring system.

Carrum Beach is 2km long and merges into Franston beach at the southern end. It houses the Carrum Sailing Club and the Patterson River Yacht Club, located next to the river mouth and its short entrance walls.

Carrum railway station is a mere 200 inland from the beach and a picnic area and car park are nearby. The Carrum Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1937, patrols the northern section of the beach. The new renovations are set to enhance Carrum’s reputation as a great beach for all the family.
