The Little Joe Clubhouse
Designer Will Yates creates film pavilion in Shoreditch’s Rich Mix
As part of the Fringe! film festival held in Shoreditch last weekend, designer Will Yates of Philippe Malouin Design was commissioned to create a sculptural film pavilion based on the ideas of a den, a commune and a sanctuary.

‘The Little Joe Clubhouse’ hosted free intimate screenings and discussions over the course of the Fringe! festival. The designer aimed to create a temporary film space that was cosy and secluded as well as being open and stimulating.

The simple timber frame pavilion featured removable fabric blanket facades. All materials were chosen because they were economical and locally-sourced. The de-barked chestnut trunks used for the frame were sourced from woodland an hour outside London, the chipped (reconstituted) foam blocks were from Clapton and the recycled non-woven fabric blankets, normally used in the house removals industry, were from KentishTown.
The simple method of construction allows the pavilion to be easily built, dismantled, stored and rebuilt in a new location in the future.
