Published last week, AJ Spec’s third Green Products issue includes a survey of CAD software used by architects as a tool for sustainable design and specification.

Mara defines three green software sub-categories: specialist complex packages, packages for architects created by architects and general comprehensive software that includes a high level of sustainable design functionality. Through a series of user interviews, he examines a range of both graphic and spreadsheet packages, including PHPP (Passivhaus Planning Package), IES (Integrated Environmental Solutions), Carbon Mixer, Autodesk, Bentley, Graphisoft and Nemetschek.
As CAD and BIM are increasingly integrated into specification procedures, a working understanding of these tools is becoming essential for architects.
