Women in Sustainable Architecture: Kirsten Henson

Founding consultant at KLH Sustainability

Kirsten Henson is a sustainability consultant and founder of KLH Sustainability.

She was involved in the early masterplanning stages of the Olympic Park, where she worked to develop the sustainability strategy. She then worked as a consultant on the project guiding the architects, engineers and contractors in order to achieve the Park’s sustainability targets.

‘Sustainability is not an output that can be measured by BREEAM or LEED – although these are useful tools – it is change in the way we approach projects,’ she said. ‘Change needs structure and process; by mapping the complex interactions between social, economic and natural systems we can develop resilient places that are able to respond and adapt to external influences. We must understand great ideas can come from the most unexpected places and it is our job to ensure we seek out the unexpected.’
