Revealed: AJ/Saint-Gobain sketch competition shortlist

Architects, student, teacher and illustrator among those chosen from nearly 200 entrants and 400 drawings

Eight entrants have been shortlisted for the AJ/Saint-Gobain sketch contest on the theme of ‘habitation’.

The finalists were chosen from almost 200 entrants, who submitted more than 400 sketches between them.

The shortlist

  • Hannah Carding, illustrator
  • Rebecca Crompton, art and design teacher
  • Stefan de Bevers, Dutch architect
  • Derek Draper, architect
  • Theo Games Petrohilos, part 3 student
  • Mohna Jolly, architect
  • Pedro Serrano, designer
  • Felicity Steers, landscape architect

Contest judge George Saumarez-Smith, director at Adam Architecture, said: ‘We were looking for something that is immediate, that has come as an emotional response from looking at something.’

The other judges were: AJ deputy editor Rory Olcayto; technical development manager at Saint-Gobain UK Mark Allen; Chris Dyson, managing director, Chris Dyson Architects and Paul Middleton, architect and the winner of last year’s Sketch a Facade competition.

The winner will be announced at an event on 26 February. The best sketch will win an iPad Mini and a trip to Saint-Gobain’s research and development office and its DomoLab innovation experience centre in Paris. The runner-up will receive an annual subscription to the AJ and The Architectural Review and a set of drawing pencils.
