Elephant and Castle: Make your mind up

London’s Elephant and Castle can be fairly described as an architectural triumph in rendering despair

So, not unsurprisingly, there were groans last month when developer Lend Lease confirmed the shelving of Make’s regeneration masterplan. At the BCO conference earlier this month (AJ 10.06.10), Make founder Ken Shuttleworth said he did not know when the project would again grow legs.

But Southwark Council is pushing ahead with a scheme to eliminate the Elephant’s southern roundabout and its rambling pedestrian underpasses. Its Space Syntax-designed scheme even features new trees, but could it be a wasted effort if Make’s masterplan calls for it all to be torn up again?
