David Chipperfield wins Houston gallery contest

The Menil houses the art collection of local philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil in Renzo Piano’s first American building, completed in 1986. It is set on a greenfield site in the city’s museum district.

The expansion plans includes accommodation for the drawing institute, study centre, auditorium and archive. The museum spoke to six practices before selecting David Chipperfield Architects to draw up a masterplan for the site. It is understood other firms may be asked to design individual components.

'Chipperfield is incredibly open and flexible,' said the Menil’s deputy director Emily Todd. 'I think he will also press us to really think through some very difficult questions.'
