Darlington seeks architect for theatre revamp

Darlington Borough Council is seeking a design team to overhaul its Grade II-listed civic theatre

Formerly known as the Hippodrome and Palace Theatre, the 1907 structure was designed by Birmingham-based theatre architects Owen & Ward.

The iconic building – located in the centre of the north-east of England market town – has been in need of urgent renovation since the council saved the theatre from closure in 2011.

An additional £1 fee was levied on all tickets for the venue last year to help raise funds for the restoration project.

The £450,000 contract is expected to run for 36 months.

The deadline for submissions is 25 April.
