Weave a good yarn

Urban Splash’s New Islington bridge competition has drawn a healthy number of entrants – despite a wee error with the scale in the brief. One of the proposals which didn’t make the final four but did catch the judge’s eye, was this teeeerrific design by Murray Kerr of BDP. Kerr’s mad[golf]cap scheme for the new footbridge over the Rochdale Canal was to be made ‘entirely from golfers sporting Pringle, Lyle & Scott and Ashworth’. In Kerr’s own words, ‘the bridge will be colourful, warm to the touch on cold winter mornings and interesting under foot as you step on a mixture of cashmere, merino and plain old lambswool.’ As a reward, the architect suggested that the participants should be given an MBE for their time. It was a plan so crazy, it just might have worked. Sorry Mr Ballesteros, was that your face?
