Thomas Demand, artist and 1:1 model enthusiast, interviewed on film
See video of Thomas Demand talking to Art Review about the stories behind his work currently on show at the Sprüth Mager gallery, London.
The photos are of a 1:1 paper and cardboard model of the White House’s Oval Office, taken from different angles. The resulting images have a weird hyper-reality to them where the viewer is aware something is awry, but can’t quite place what - until realising the method behind the image’s composition.
The painstaking methods of Demand were emulated last year by students from Kingston University School of Architecture in its successful ‘Demanding Attention’ exhibition (see AJ 04.12.08).
Demand has also produced models for Caruso St John, of its Escher Wyss Platz in Zurich and the Museo Sant’Eustorgio, Milan (see AJ 23.10.08).
