Portsmouth School of Architecture

[STUDENT SHOWS 2011] Diploma students from the Portsmouth School of Architecture ‘have demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to their chosen profession’ says Alistair Barr, Director of Barr Gazetas

For the first time, twelve fifth year students travelled up from Portsmouth to London to present their theses to the profession and wider audience at the Dreamspace Gallery in Shoreditch. Organised by Simon Drayson and Vinesh Pomal, the exhibition display a high degree of professionalism throughout the students work.

During their foundation year, the students used the Hilsea Lido in Portsmouth as their year-long project with the theme of ‘Health and Wellbeing.’  Darren Leach’s proposal saw the creation of a contemporary reinterpretation of the ‘village hall’ typology set within a new urban landscape, represented beautifully by a two metre-long model.

In their final year, the students joined one of five studios, each with their own themes and research programmes: Landscape, FM&P (Finding Methodology and Practice), Emergent, Urbanism, and Culture & Identity.

Natasha Butler and Joshua Kievenaar of the Emergent Studio presented their beautiful drawings of their project which explored the nature of pilgrimage and everyday experience, which has been nominated for the RIBA President’s Silver Medal Award. Simon Drayson exhibited his playful designs for a refuge for the street children of Marrakech in the Atlas Mountains; the colourful architecture provided opportunity to dwell poetically through connecting courtyards in which to eat, bathe and sleep.

Niall Bird of Studio FM&P, winner the SPAB Philip Webb Award for two years running, showcased his winning scheme for the redevelopment of Burseldon Brickworks into a Skills Centre, testing theories of intervention theoretically, strategically and practically in historic buildings. Vinesh Pomal investigated the social and cultural values around revitalising the historic context of Es Jonquet in Palma de Mallorca. His contemporary yet contextual approach through community engagement was evident in his proposal for a new ‘Urban Room’. 

‘The diversity of presentation techniques and range of design approaches were notable’ says Alistair. This exhibition demonstrates the schools diverse approach to architecture from concept through to detail design. Ruth Lang of Inside Out Architecture gave credit “to the students and the approach of the teaching staff that within each studio each student has been able to explore their own style and develop a true character of architectural design all their own.”
