Cracking up in Blackpool

Tragedy, and tooled-up council workmen, hit Blackpool’s new Comedy Carpet

What’s funnier: the hundreds of jokes on the £4 million Comedy Carpet laid out across 2,200m² of the Festival Headland below Blackpool tower, or the fact that the council has jack-hammered up a stretch of the CABE-supported artwork to stop tourists stepping back on to the tramlines to read the bottom of it?

Certainly not the latter according to the scheme’s artist Gordon Young: ‘Not only have the council ruined my artwork and removed the names of so many comedians, but they have even destroyed the dedication stone. It was a huge honour to have Ken Dodd unveil the Comedy Carpet. I’m gobsmacked that the council should treat him so shabbily.’

Tragedy and comedy have always skipped along hand in hand.
