Southend beach hut contest launched

[Deadline for submissions 24 Septemer] Southend on Sea Borough Council is seeking to appoint an architect to design and procure a series of beach huts

The competition seeks ‘interesting and innovative’ designs for between 10 and 15 waterfront chalets located on East Beach in Shoeburyness .

According to the tender notice, proposals are expected to achieve ‘low maintenance costs and minimal environmental impact’.

They should also ‘[take] into account contemporary environmental concerns and [build] on the traditional look of a beach hut whilst exploring how the beach may develop in the future.’

Divided into two stages, the first pre-qualification phase will see three architect-led design teams selected while in the second stage the finalist teams will work up their designs to RIBA stage D.

Each shortlisted team will receive a fee of £750 excluding VAT in stage two.

The winning practice will develop its proposal from RIBA stages E to L with a view to completing the structures in time for Spring 2013.

The schemes’ assessment will be split 50-50 between the design and fee.
