Science Central is a new urban quarter in central Newcastle, integrating cutting-edge scientific organisations with a mixed use community anchored by Newcastle University. A design team is initially being sought to deliver part 1 of the masterplan to take the project through to stage L.

To realise this 1NG are leading on the delivery of the transformational regeneration of Science Central on behalf of its partners Newcastle Science City, Newcastle Council and One North East, to establish Newcastle as an international location for science and knowledge intensive business and talent.
The vision for Science Central is to create a new urban quarter in the centre of Newcastle, which will be an exemplar in sustainability, attracting leading edge scientific organisations to a mixed new community encompassing a variety of educational, business and residential uses, and anchored by Newcastle University.
1NG is seeking to appoint a specialist design team to provide full design services who will be required to work together with 1NG and its partners to take forward the next stage in the development of Science Central.
A deliverable and sustainable masterplan for Science Central is currently being finalised and is expected to be submitted for outline planning consent in October 2010. It is then the intention to develop the site in parts:
Part 1 - Infrastructure works for phase 1 from stage A to stage L, in accordance with RIBA plan of works;
Part 2 - Design services for a Gateway Building from stage A to stage L, in accordance with RIBA plan of works;
Part 3 - Infrastructure works for the remainder of the site to developed as part of a phased approach.
A multi-disciplinary professional design team is sought to undertake the entire scope of these services. However the initial focus will be on delivering Part 1. The successful tenderer will enter into contractual terms with the Contracting Authority for Part 1. Tenderers should note that this does not guarantee appointment to Parts 2 and 3. The Contracting Authority reserves the right to exercise Part 2 and 3 with the successful tenderer.
The assignments will require a multi-disciplinary design team and is likely to require at least the following skill sets:
— Services engineer (mechanical & electrical),
— Civil & structural engineer,
— Highways engineer,
— Landscape architect,
— BREEAM assessor,
— CEEQUAL assessor,
— Quantity surveyor,
— Preparation of site waste management plan,
— Employer’s agent.
