The RIBA will hold two Sandcastle Challenges in the South East this summer with both team and individual competitors welcome

Open to architectural practices and the public, the contests will be held on Saturday 29 June at Margate Beach and on Saturday 17 August at West Wittering Beach.

Prizes will be awarded in several categories including overall winner, tallest structure and most daring sandcastle.

Registration is free and should be made through emma.hardy@riba.org.

Meanwhile a serperate, Whitby-based version of the event is seeking ten architect-led teams to participate on Saturday 30 June. A £200 top prize will go to the winner’s favourite charity.

A list of rules is available which notes among other tips that the use of ‘a motorized digger is not allowed’. Early registrants may be eligible for a free bucket and spade.
